Upon completing his engineering studies in 1983, Joe began his career in intellectual property as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Arlington, Virginia. After working two years as an Examiner Joe moved back home to Detroit in 1985 and began working as a Registered Patent Agent for a small Patent/IP Law Firm. He attended Law School in the evening program at Wayne State University, while continuing full time work as Patent Agent, as well as being a husband and father to four young daughters. Subsequent to graduating Law School with honors, Joe became a partner in the Patent / IP Law Firm of Weiner, Carrier, Burt & Esser, PC and continued with the Firm until 1998 when he founded and managed the law firm of Carrier, Blackman & Associates, PC. In 2022, the Firm become Carrier, Shende & Associates, PC due to retirement of Mr. William Blackman, where Joe continues as Managing Partner.
Joe has 40+ years of full time experience in Patent / IP Law practice covering a wide range of activities, including patent examination, patent searching, patent application preparation, prosecution and appeals involving U.S. and international patent applications in a wide variety of industries, but with a primary focus on automotive and chemical related industries, as well as litigating patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters.
Joe has been retained by several US and International Companies to provide them with expertise on patent procurement and patent / IP portfolio strategies.
